The Ramblers Association is a national organization of some 140,000 members which has been in existence for over 70 years This is then broken down to some 450 groups of which Preston is one and currently has a membership of around 270.
The group operates in the city of Preston, Lancashire and the parishes of Goosnargh, Barton, Woodplumpton, Broughton, Whittingham, Haighton, Grimsargh, Fulwood and Lea. Within this area there are many paths, bridleways and quiet country lanes providing a network to much beautiful and unspoilt countryside. Unfortunately, constant vigilance is required to conserve the beauty of our countryside and its wildlife, and to preserve the existence of public rights of way. The group is active in this work and have had notable successes, but much work remains.
The aims of the Association
An independent, voluntary organization which is widely recognized and respected as the authoritative voice for all walkers in Britain, from local strollers to mountain walkers
An organization which, on all matters of concern to walkers in Britain, is an effective opinion former, with a high degree of influence over all relevant decision makers, including local, national and European governments: landowners and managers; and those supplying goods and services to walkers.
An organization which where necessary, takes action to enforce the rights of the public.
A source of authoritative advice, information and educational material on all matters concerning walking in, and public access on foot to, the countryside of Britain.
An organization which is supported by hundreds of thousands of members, with that membership reflecting a true cross-section of the people of Britain.
An organization with an extensive network of hundreds of local Groups, each one pursuing the Ramblers' objectives; and with all members in Britain having in their locality a Ramblers' Group whose walks, campaigning and other activities they can regularly take part in, if they wish to do so.
A democratic organization in which members have control over the association's policy, and in which there is a high degree of volunteer involvement at all levels.
An organization within which there is excellent communication between all levels, and between those levels and the general membership.
